从前，在一个村子里住着两个同名的人。

其中一个有四匹马，而另一个只有一匹；为了区分他们，人们把有四匹马的主人称为“大克劳斯”，只有一匹马的称为“小克劳斯”。

现在我们来听听他们身上发生了什么事，因为这是一个真实的故事。

整整一个星期，小克劳斯都得为大克劳斯耕田，还得把自己的一匹马借给他；而每周一次，在星期天，大克劳斯会把他的四匹马都借给小克劳斯。

“我来替你让你的马驾起来。”大克劳斯说；他抓起一把锤子，朝小克劳斯的那匹马的头上砸去，马立刻倒地死了。

“哦，现在我一匹马也没有了。”小克劳斯哭着说。

但是过了一会儿，他剥下死马的皮，把皮挂起来晾干。

然后他把干皮放进一个袋子里，扛在肩上，去隔壁的城镇卖马皮。

他要走很长的路，还必须穿过一片黑暗阴森的森林。

不久暴风雨来了，他迷了路，还没找到正确的路，傍晚就到了，离城镇还有很长的路，晚上之前也来不及回家了。

路边有一座大农舍。

农夫的妻子开了门；但是当她听到他的请求时，她叫他走开，因为她的丈夫不允许她接纳陌生人。

“那我就只好躺在这儿了。”小克劳斯自言自语道，因为农夫的妻子当着他的面关上了门。

农舍附近有一个大干草堆，在干草堆和农舍之间有一个小棚屋，棚屋有茅草屋顶。

于是小克劳斯爬上棚屋的屋顶，在他调整姿势想让自己躺得舒服些的时候，发现关着的木百叶窗没有达到农舍窗户的顶部高度，这样他就能看到一个房间，房间里有一张大桌子，上面摆放着酒、烤肉和一条漂亮的鱼。

农夫的妻子和教堂执事正坐在桌旁；她给他的杯子斟满酒，还给他很多鱼吃，鱼似乎是他最喜欢的菜。

他是个好人，但他仍然有一种非常奇怪的偏见——他一看到教堂执事就受不了。

由于这种不喜欢，教堂执事在农夫不在家的时候去拜访了农夫的妻子，善良的女人把家里最好的东西拿出来给他吃。

女人非常友好地接待了他们俩，在一张大桌子上铺上桌布，给他们端上一盘粥。

“嘘！”小克劳斯对他的袋子说，同时又踩了一下，直到它发出比之前更大的吱吱声。

“嘿！你的袋子里有什么！”农夫问。

“hallo!whathaveyougotyoursack!”askedthefarr.

“哦，这是一个魔法师。”小克劳斯说，“他说我们不必吃粥了，因为他用法术变出了一烤箱的烤肉、鱼和馅饼。”

“他说你必须去打开角落里的那个大箱子，你会看到魔鬼蹲在里面；但你必须紧紧抓住盖子，以免他溜出来。”

“你能来帮我按住盖子吗？”农夫说，走向那个他妻子把教堂执事藏在里面的箱子，现在教堂执事躺在里面，非常害怕。

“再见。”小克劳斯说，他带着他的钱和大箱子走了，教堂执事还藏在箱子里。

在森林的一边有一条又宽又深的河，水流非常急，很少有人能逆流而游。

一座新桥最近在河上建起来了，小克劳斯在桥中间停下来，大声地说，让教堂执事能听到，“现在我该拿这个愚蠢的箱子怎么办呢；它重得好像装满了石头：如果我再推着它走下去我会很累的，所以我还不如把它扔到河里；如果它跟着我漂到我家，那很好，如果不是，也没多大关系。”

于是他手里抓住箱子，稍微抬了抬，好像要把它扔到水里。

“不，别扔。”教堂执事从箱子里喊道，“先让我出来。”

“哦。”小克劳斯叫道，假装很害怕，“他还在里面，是吗？我必须把他扔到河里，让他淹死。”

教堂执事爬了出来，把空箱子推进水里，然后回了家，接着他给小克劳斯量出满满一蒲式耳的金子，小克劳斯已经从农夫那里得到了一蒲式耳，所以现在他有一推车的金子了。

“大克劳斯要是知道我因为一匹马变得这么富有，他会多生气啊；但我不会确切地告诉他这一切是怎么发生的。”

然后他派一个男孩去大克劳斯那里借一个蒲式耳的量器。

“哦，卖了我的马皮，我昨天卖的。”

“那肯定卖了个好价钱。”大克劳斯说；然后他跑回家，抓起一把斧头，把他的四匹马都砍死了，剥下它们的皮，拿到镇上去卖。
