安徒生这个故事的素材来源是马蒂亚斯?温特的《十一只天鹅》（收录于这个故事注释的末尾），发表于他1823年的《丹麦民间故事集》。

很容易想象安徒生为什么会被这样一个包含着对他来说代表神秘、灵性和壮美之鸟的故事所吸引。
